A fantastic podcast option, the Zune even ekes past the iPod for the top spot. The software is excellent for podcasts: You can manage how many episodes you want to sync to your device on a subscription-by-subscription level, meaning you can update three episodes of Buzz Out Loud, but only one of MP3 Insider and so on. You can also unsubscribe from podcasts directly from the player, and there’s an option to wirelessly sync new podcasts when you charge your player at night. The Zune also offers accelerated fast forwarding and passive bookmarking to automatically remember your spot in each podcast.

What an strange and welcome move from Fujitsu, Korean language support in Japan for Fujitsu PCs running either XP or Vista (Japanese Version)… Well while I welcome the move from Fujitsu to think about foreigners in Japan (Korean are the largest foreign community in Japan but only represent in Japan less than 0.5% of the population in Japan)… I would love Fujitsu to go even further and offer their PC, even if they are sold as “Order Made” in different languages and with different keyboard layout… Let’s say for the sake of the argument, the possibility for a Korean living in Japan to get a Fujitsu PC (Japanese model) sold with a Korean keyboard and Korean OS… A bit like Apple does with the possibility here in Japan to order your Mac in English (well OSX is sold in every different languages) and a fully loaded QWERTY Keyboard. Fujitsu Japan to start Computer Support in Korean.

Anyway, “Bravo” Fujitsu, this is definitively a good move but I am sure you can do even better!

The problem mainly affects Windows XP SP3, but users of other versions of Windows are also claiming to see the problem.

Following the quarantining of the files users will be faced by a dialog box warning them that system files have been changed and that it may make the system unstable.

This problems seems to have started yesterday and some users who called up tech support were told that a fix would be forthcoming. A fix was released but for some this just seemed to bring more misery. If you are affected then try updating the malware signatures and then un-quarantining the files and see if that works for you. What makes it doubly frustrating for users is that there’s been no official word from CA about this issue.

If you accidentally deleted the quarantined files then the instructions here should help you put them back.

Do you want to learn how to remove computer viruses as quickly as possible? If you feel that your PC has been attacked by a virus or any other forms of malware and is behaving very strangely, you will be glad to know that they are fast and easy solutions to the problem. There is no need to get yourself a new computer that might not be worth the money. There are ways that you can use to find and get rid of these harmful files inside your system.

1. Stop your Family and Friends From Clicking on Links Sent Out by Your MSN Messenger or Email Messages!

A PC that has been infected by a virus will attempt to use the system as a platform to spread itself to other contacts on the infected computer user’s MSN contact list and saved email addresses. It can do so by sending messages to your friends and families and entice them to click on normal-looking links to malicious websites. Even files that you have downloaded and plan to forward to your peers might also get infected with the viruses.

2. What Kind of Harm Can Computer Viruses Do to Your PC?

They can cause of a lot of damages to your PC if they are not removed early. Some of the harmful stuff they can do include acting as a keylogger and monitoring device to record all the keystrokes that you type on your keyboard as well as destroying all the data in your hard disks. Some unfortunate users who have got their systems infected have got all their important files deleted and also their passwords and credit card numbers stolen for identity theft.

3. How to Remove Computer Viruses Quickly and Easily?

The fastest method would be to download anti-virus and anti-spyware software. They are able to detect malware quickly and can also get rid of them.

Without power supply a computer cannot function. One of the most important components of a computer, as it gives life, so to speak. However, a failure of the PSU (Power Supply Unit) can bring with it a plethora of uncertainties as the usual computer troubleshooting method is immediately nullified by the fact you can no longer turn the PC on.

The main cause for concern with a recently deceased PSU is that in their dying throes they can take other components with them. So, how does one go about diagnosing a computer without a power supply? Here are the steps to begin the process:

1) Have a replacement PSU.

While almost all users do not possess a second PSU, those who do can begin diagnosing immediately via replacement. However, if this is not the case you must proceed to the second step.

2) Find a replacement.

This is where things get tough, for the normal user it will involve taking it to a PC repair shop and have the technicians sort it out. Costs more money in the long run but assures a diagnosis.

The aftermath is having a new PSU in the machine, turning on the power button and hoping something happens, if it does then the PSU was merciful in its last moments. If you chose to diagnose it yourself, then something in inherently wrong which in and of itself involves the following process:

    * Check to see if the connectors are properly hooked up. Everybody makes mistakes; even computer techs are not immune from one of the simplest. Simply checking for securely connected power cables can solve the problem.
* Begin a step-by-step visual analysis of the inside. While this is borderline on something a technician does, and they do, it can be done in an abbreviated fashion by the layman, the first thing to notice if there is any smell similar to burning plastic. If there is, immediately take it to a computer repair shop. If not, check the motherboard for any discoloration; check the hard drive for any black discoloration as well.
* Take it to a repair shop. If you cannot diagnose it from looking at it or checking connectors, then simply take it to a professional.

t’s no surprise that computer repair shops might snoop for porn on laptops they fix, but an investigation by Sky provides anecdotal evidence that unscrupulous repairmen are prepared to attempt bank fraud as well.

Sky planted surveillance software on a brand-new laptop, before rigging an easy to diagnose fault by dislodging an internal memory chip from its connection. Fixing the problem, which prevented Windows machines from booting, was as simple as pushing the chip back in. However all but one of six repair shops put through a mystery shopper test by Sky either misdiagnosed the fault or overcharged for repairs.

The worst overcharging offender was Laptop Revival from Hammersmith, West London, which claimed the laptop needed a new motherboard at a cost of £130, shortly after identifying the genuine fault.

The monitoring software logged one repair technician from Laptop Revival riffling through files in a folder clearly labeled as private, including photos of Sky’s female researcher in her bikini. He called over a colleague to view the images. The pictures and supposed log-on details for social networking and online banking sites were downloaded onto a memory stick. Subsequent attempts to log into the online banking account by the technician only failed because the details were false.

Managers at Laptop Revival denied knowing about the alleged abuses of trust carried out by its technicians when confronted by Sky over the abuse.

He pries plastic parts from the cold corpses of dead computers. Above, you see his collection of cadaverous key-caps, along with logos from pretty much everything Steve Jobs ever worked on.

The Apple logos come from iMacs and old CRT studio displays (the blue ones), Quadras and LaserWriters (rainbows), the Next logos (our favorites, due to the weird 3D nature that works very well in photos) and caps from various Apple keyboards (as Univac points out, “What the hell would a ‘Here Is’ key be used for?”).

For every billable hour in both July and August, Hemi-PC, Fredericton’s same-day PC repair service, will donate $5 to the Fredericton Food Bank, as well as 10 per cent of all consignment sales.

“We tend to see big ramp-ups at Christmas for donations and help to the food bank, but in the slower summer months, it almost seems to dwindle. It’s important that we in the community keep help flowing for these programs to work properly,” says Michael Taylor, co-owner of Hemi-PC.

In a challenge to other local businesses, Taylor hoped that, “other local businesses would come on board to help as well in any capacity possible. There are more people hurting out there than ever and there’s no invitation required to help.”

Hemi-PC, at 517b Northumberland St., specializes in fixing and returning of PCs the same day they are brought in.

It can be found online at www.hemi-pc.com

The Fredericton Community Service Inc., better known as The Fredericton Food Bank, is a registered nonprofit organization located at 860 Grandame St.

When you’re on the go and having laptop problems, RESCUECOM’s laptop repair service can respond, 24/7, to your wireless, virus and software issues.

1) Small Fixes to Avoid Big Problems

RESCUECOM’s techs see a great variety of computer repair problems every day; one of the most common computer repairs deals with laptop screens. Laptop screens typically use liquid crystal display (or LCD) to show images and are made of millions of little dots called pixels. When sections of your screen appear distorted or smudged, these pixels are probably “stuck” on one color and may need a laptop repair. Professional laptop repair services may be able to fix or “unstick” small amounts of damaged pixels, or just turn them off so that they appear black. A white or black pixel is dead and likely cannot be fixed through a simple laptop repair. With too many dead pixels, a laptop repair may not be enough, and you may need to replace your screen.

2) Do-It-Yourself Laptop Screen Repairs

A dark or unlit screen is often an easy laptop repair. Laptop screens are backlit and turned on or off by opening or closing the lid of your laptop, triggering a switch. Often times, this switch may stick and not turn on the backlight when you open it. These small switches tend to be near the hinges of the laptop and can usually be freed by tapping them lightly, without needing a professional laptop computer repair. Another possibility is that your backlight may not be receiving power properly; that is a computer repair issue usually indicated by a flickering screen. Laptop repairs of this nature usually involve the inverter, a part in your laptop that sends power to your laptop’s backlight. This can be a simple and relatively cheap laptop repair to do on your own, or turn to the pros at RESCUECOM for an experienced computer repair.

3) How Screen Savers Can Literally Save Your Screen

A screen saver can help you avoid needing a computer repair for your laptop screen. When your laptop is left open and idle for a long time, the constant static display of the same image can “burn” your screen. Eventually this “burning” will require a laptop repair for the screen, as it gradually quickens the deterioration of your screen’s resolution and weakens its ability to show colors. A screen saver allows your idle screen to run a constantly moving display and keep your resolution changing until you return. This can help eliminate the possibility of that static, burning effect and help you avoid computer repairs for your laptop screen. Also, most computers allow your screen saver to be password-protected: An unattended, idle computer displaying a screen saver will not allow a user back into the computer without a password. Not only can a screen saver save your computer from unnecessary laptop repairs, but it can also safeguard your privacy.

4) Tips to Avoid Major Computer Repairs

Besides the many computer repair issues we’ve seen regarding laptop screens, many other common problems can require laptop repairs. If you drop your laptop, that can damage the motherboard and require expensive computer repair services. If you spill liquid on your laptop, that can cause short circuits and corrosion and warrant laptop repair on your hardware. In the event of a spill on your laptop, immediately turn off the computer and leave it upside down for roughly 30 minutes. Once the computer is sufficiently dry, you should seek a laptop repair service to inspect and see if additional laptop repair steps are needed. Overheating can also cause physical damage to a laptop’s hardware. Consider hiring a computer repair service to have your laptop’s fan safely cleaned free of any dirt and dust buildup and examined for any other potential computer repair issues.

5) Seek Expert Advice for Your Computer Repair

Laptop computer repair companies offer different services and levels of expertise, but most laptop repairs can be costly. RESCUECOM encourages you to research your laptop repair problem to learn how to do simple computer repair tasks, but never risk taking on a complicated laptop repair without first consulting flawless, 24/7, onsite computer repair support from RESCUECOM.

Most modern desktops and laptops have power to spare, but netbooks are notoriously pokey. Consequently, you should turn off any operating-system features that can make your Lilliputian PC even slower.

If your system runs Windows XP, as most netbooks do, here’s an easy way to squeeze some extra speed out of it:

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Double-click System.

3. Click the Advanced tab, followed by the Settings button in the Performance section.

4. By default, the Visual Effects tab is usually set to Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer. Windows knows best?! Hardly. Change the setting to Adjust for best performance. As you’ll see, this disables all XP’s visual effects.

5. Click OK, then wait a few seconds while Windows readjusts itself. Click OK again to exit System Properties.

While this leaves you with a plainer, less visually exciting Windows, it also lets your netbook devote its minimal processing power to more important things, like running apps and crunching data.

In a bid to inject some spark into stodgy home printers, HP has introduced a new all-in-one touchscreen printer that can directly connect to the web and print coupons, maps, movie tickets, news and weather information without the need for a PC.
HP has also taken the idea of apps, popularized by smartphones such as iPhone and T-Mobile G1, and extended it to its product. That means the company’s latest printer will come preloaded with HP applications that can be accessed via the touchscreen panel. HP will also allow users to create and download apps from their site later this year.
“By giving people access to the content they want at the touch of a finger, the ability to customize their printing experience and create their own apps, we are driving a significant shift in how people will be printing in the future,” says Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president, imaging and printing group, HP.
That means picture yourself just turning on this printer going to Fandango and printing movie tickets or accessing Coupons.com for the latest grocery deals, or printing directions right off the device.
The new printer comes with a rather clunky name–the HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web, and a hefty price tag. It will be available starting fall for $400.
The printer will have a 4.3-inch LCD touchscreen and can print, fax, copy and scan. It can also print directly from Wi-Fi-enabled PCs, Bluetooth-enabled devices, iPhone and the iPod touch.
The device’s user interface seems fairly easy to use and it will have the ability to browse the web, though it is not likely to be a complete browser. Among the early HP app partners will be USA Today, Google including mpas and calendar, Fandango, Coupons.com and Web Sudoku. The printer will also connect directly to a user’s Snapfish account to view, print and upload photos.
Bringing maps, news and coupons functionality to a printer makes it more likely that the average user will get more value from their printer support. But unless HP can bring that $400 price tag down significantly, this could end up as a niche product.

Microsoft has released a new version of its toolset designed to help administrators migrate shared folders between servers running Windows operating systems. Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit 1.2 went live in June 2009, and is currently up for grabs via the Microsoft Download Center. Making use of the Distributed File System (DFS), the File Server Migration Toolkit is capable of maintaining Universal Naming Convention (UNC) paths. In this manner, admins will be able to enjoy a simplified consolidation and migration process, the software giant promised.

“Microsoft released the File Server Migration Toolkit version 1.2 (FSMT 1.2), which will help you migrate file shares from computers running Windows NT 4.0 Server, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2003 Server, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Storage Server 2008 to computers running Windows 2003 Server, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Storage Server 2008. You can use it to consolidate multiple file servers or simply to migrate files between servers,” revealed Jose Barreto, Principal Program Manager with the File Server Foundation Team.

Barreto explained that with the release of version 1.2 of the File Server Migration Toolkit, the company managed to provide a fix for a problem that affected migrations involving Windows Server 2003 clusters. At the same time, the software giant is gearing up for the next iteration of the Windows Sever platform. In this regard, Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit 1.2 has also been tested on the successor of Windows Server 2008, namely Windows Server 2008 R2 in the Release Candidate stage. However, the Redmond-based company will only introduce full support for Windows Server 2008 R2 once the operating system is launched, October 22, 2009.

Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit 1.2 is available for download here.

A home-grown company has come up with what it is pitching as a cheap alternative to Apple’s tiniest digital-music player, the iPod Shuffle.

Barely the size of a thumb, the Kube (right) measures 23mm by 23mm and weighs 18g. The company behind the player, Blue Tree Electronics, wants to make MP3 players affordable for everyone by pricing the Kube at only S$34.90.

It is also selling it at 7-Eleven stores so as to reach out to a wider clientele. Despite its light weight, the player can pack in six hours of performance, with just an hour of charging needed, said Blue Tree.

Source: digital.asiaone.com

Despite launching the product at all 450 7-Eleven stores, Blue Tree insisted “we are no Creative”, referring to one of the most successful companies in Singapore, Creative Technologies, well known for its line of MP3 players.

The company, set up by a group of long-time friends in 2004, initially went into designing electronic products for other companies.

Last year, the group decided to make and market its own MP3 player.

Ms Goh DjongDjong, Blue Tree’s sales manager, said: “We felt the time was right. Three years ago, everyone just wanted the iPod, which was deemed cool.

“Now, people are probably more used to it and, maybe, are looking for cheaper alternatives.”

She also pointed out how the iPod Shuffle, with its basic functions, is much pricier.

Ms Goh said: “People love to buy the Shuffle because it’s by Apple, but the price – the outdated Shuffle still costs $79 – just isn’t there.”

Lenovo has become the latest PC vendor to offer users a free upgrade to Windows 2007. The company said that all systems sold between 26 June and 31 January with the Home Premium, Business and Ultimate versions of Windows Vista would be eligible for the update.

Lenovo said that the offer will be limited to home and small business system purchases. Customers who purchase more than 29 systems will be directed to use Microsoft’s volume licensing programme instead.

The offer makes Lenovo the second major PC vendor to roll out a free upgrade programme in recent days. On Thursday HP said that it would be offering a similar deal to users who purchase new systems between now and the 22 October release of Windows 7.

Microsoft is also pressing users to plan an upgrade to the new version of Windows. The company said yesterday that it would offer discounted pricing to those who pre-ordered copies of Windows 7.

The company is also offering a deferred cost programme to encourage more PC vendors to offer free upgrades to Windows 7.

Both Microsoft and PC vendors are hoping that the free upgrade campaigns will serve as a way to keep users purchasing new systems throughout the summer rather than waiting until after the release of Windows 7 to purchase a new PC.

If you inspect the IIS web service logs you’ll will see all the access logs, which include source IP address and username. This file is very cumbersome, however. A friend of mine, Tim McCarty, used the LOGPARSER tool with a little T-SQL script to take the data and reformat into a more digestible format. To make sure logs are enabled check, the Web Site tab of the default web site, as shown here. Click to expand.

First, save the following as UsersofOWA.sql Select date as [Date], time as [Time], s-ip as [Server IP], cs-username as [UserName], c-ip as [Client-IP], cs-method as [Request Verb], cs-uri-stem as [Request URI] FROM \\D:\sources\logs \OWALogins.csv

Once you have the CSV file, you can see information such as unique users using Microsoft Excel’s remove duplicates functionality. You can also tune the above commands and formats to get the format you want.
